The ongoing debate over transitioning from a rental model to a percentage-based revenue system in Telangana’s single-screen theaters has sparked a bitter exchange between producers and exhibitors. The conflict recently escalated when producer Naga Vamsi openly criticized prodcuer, distributor and exhibitor Asian Suniel Narang.
Opposing the percentage system, Vamsi accused Suniel of focusing entirely on expanding his multiplex chain at the expense of single screens, arguing that multiplex owners advocating for single-screen survival is hypocritical.
In a sharp and personal counter, Asian Suniel fired back, referring to Naga Vamsi as a "duplicate wig fellow." Defending his position, Suniel firmly denied abandoning single screens, revealing that he currently operates 33 single-screen properties and is actively constructing several more.
He also emphasized that he always books 15 additional single screens for his film releases. Addressing the financial realities of the exhibition sector, Suniel countered the perception that percentage system in multiplexes is highly profitable. He stated that multiplexes are currently just achieving break-even status, highlighting that the entire distribution and exhibition business is struggling.
Suniel maintained that implementing the percentage system is a necessary step to ensure the survival of single-screen theaters against rising operational costs.
