The theatrical release of the Suriya starrer Karuppu has turned into a high-stakes financial drama. On the scheduled release day of May 14th, the film hit a massive roadblock as morning shows were canceled across various centers. RJ Balaji, who has both directed and acted in the film, released an emotional video byte expressing his heartbreak over the situation.
Crying in the video, he shared that he had strongly manifested a May 14th release for the film to become a blockbuster. Despite the current crisis, he remains hopeful that the movie will finally reach the audience starting from the late evening and night shows. The crisis stems from a staggering ₹100 crore deficit that Dream Warrior Pictures is currently facing.
The production house is struggling with significant previous film dues and loans taken from major financiers like Tiruppur Subramaniam and Madurai Anbu specifically for this project. The makers did not secure the massive OTT deal they had originally anticipated and had repeatedly delayed the release in hopes of landing a better agreement. They are now in a position where they cannot afford to postpone the film any longer, as the existing digital deal could be scrapped entirely if they miss this window.
Actor Suriya has now stepped in personally to negotiate with the financiers and resolve the deadlock. This isn't the first time he has played peacemaker; he did the same earlier this year to clear the path for Karthi’s Va Vaathiyar release, after which K.E. Gnanavelraja announced he was finally debt-free. The future of several major projects now depends on Karuppu.
While Dream Warrior Pictures is committed to Karthi's Marshal and the highly anticipated Kaithi 2, the financial strain is proving difficult to manage. If Karuppu succeeds, these problems may be solved, but a failure could jeopardize Suriya's next project with producer Naga Vamsi, Vishwanath and Sons, and potentially halt the production of Marshal and Kaithi 2 permanently.
