Facing severe criticism and mounting pressure from the girls families and the opposition for inaction UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has given in and ordered for a CBI inquiry into the incident where two minor dalit girls were raped and murdered by an section of the upper caste people in connivance with the local police who were also involved in the incident. The parents had demanded that the CBI involved as they had no faith in the local police who were also involved in this ghastly incident. A compensation of Rs 5 lakhs and fast tract court trial is what he had earlier ordered for.
Earlier Rahul Gandhi had visited the families, Mayavathi had pressed for CBI inquiry, Union Minister for Women & Child Welfare Mrs Maneka Gandhi had also offered support in the form of ordering a CBI enquiry if the parents wanted it..All the five named in the FIR including constables Sarvesh Yadav, Chhatrapal Yadav and three brothers Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Yadav and Urvesh Yadav have been arrested. The FIR was registered against seven including two unnamed. While services of Sarvesh and Chhatrapal have been terminated, sub-inspector Ram Vilas Yadav had been suspended.
Meanwhile Akhilesh Yadav has replaced state Chief Secretary Javed Usmani, and Mr Alok Ranjan has been appointed in his place. But this move would hardly call for any action as Mr Javed Usmani is likely to get a Central Deputation. There has been another rape case in Azamgarh where a minor girl was raped and the failure of the local machinery in providing safety for women and the girl child has become a burning issue in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
