Yash believes Ramayana has endured for thousands of years because it is, at its heart, a deeply human story. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, where the team promoted the film ahead of its global release, the actor shared his thoughts on portraying Ravana and the vision behind the ambitious adaptation directed by Nitesh Tiwari.
The actor, who is also producing the film alongside Namit Malhotra, said the makers never wanted to view Ramayana solely through the lens of religion. Instead, they focused on its universal themes of human conflict, emotions and ego. According to Yash, the story explores how an immensely powerful and intelligent man is ultimately brought down by his own arrogance and a series of wrong choices. He added that the team has remained faithful to the original epic without altering its emotional core, while presenting it on a grand cinematic scale for audiences across the world.
Talking about stepping into the shoes of Ravana, Yash said he never approached the character as someone who is simply evil or unrelatable. Instead, he saw Ravana as a complex human being blessed with extraordinary abilities whose overwhelming ego led to his downfall. He described the film as an ideological clash between two powerful personalities, making the role one of the most fascinating characters he has portrayed.
Recalling his childhood, Yash revealed that his grandfather first introduced him to the Ramayana as a bedtime story, an experience that stayed with him over the years. That emotional connection, he said, inspired the team to preserve the essence of Lord Rama and Sita's journey while bringing the story to life with world-class production values. He expressed confidence that audiences would be mesmerised by the visuals and emotionally invested in the narrative.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, Ramayana is being mounted as one of the biggest Indian films ever made. The film features music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, with Oscar-winning VFX studio DNEG handling the visual effects. Distributed internationally by Sony Pictures, Ramayana: Part 1 is slated for a grand worldwide release during Diwali.
