Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan underwent a successful shoulder surgery at a hospital in Mumbai on Saturday morning to treat a severe rotator cuff injury in his right shoulder. The procedure lasted nearly three-and-a-half hours, and doctors confirmed that he is currently under medical observation.
According to an official statement, medical specialists had recently advised the Deputy Chief Minister to undergo surgery at the earliest after diagnosing serious rotator cuff injuries in both shoulders, along with multiple muscle tears. However, Pawan Kalyan chose to complete his pre-scheduled official responsibilities before undergoing the operation.
Doctors decided against operating on both shoulders simultaneously, citing the intense post-operative pain and recovery challenges such a procedure would involve. As a result, surgery was first performed on the right shoulder, while the left shoulder is expected to undergo a similar procedure after a recovery period of around two months.
The injuries reportedly date back to 2016, when Pawan Kalyan sustained damage to his shoulder. Although doctors had recommended adequate rest at the time, he continued participating in public meetings and political activities. During the Jana Sena Party's Porata Yatra in 2018, and later during election campaigns and the Varahi Yatra, frequent handshakes and enthusiastic interactions with supporters are said to have aggravated the injuries. Despite recurring pain, he continued with his public engagements over the years.
Medical examinations conducted earlier this year during treatment for a nasal procedure revealed the extent of the shoulder damage. Doctors were reportedly surprised that he had continued to manage such severe injuries for nearly a decade without surgical intervention. Following further evaluations in Mumbai a few weeks ago, the surgical team finalized the treatment plan, leading to Saturday's operation. Pawan Kalyan is currently recovering under the supervision of his medical team, while doctors will assess his progress before scheduling surgery for his left shoulder.
