Tamil actor and filmmaker R. Parthiban recently secured a significant legal victory in his pursuit of an identity free from social divisions. The Madras High Court formally directed authorities to issue him a "no caste, no religion" certificate by April 29, 2026, following a plea he filed over administrative delays.
Parthiban initially applied for the certificate with the Sholinganallur tahsildar in March but faced extended inaction. In his court submission, the acclaimed director explained that while he was born to parents of a specific community, he officially renounced his caste and religious identities upon adulthood.
Because he left his formal education early and never collected his school or birth certificates, he lacked any official documents stating his community, making this new certificate essential for his records. For Parthiban, this legal step was deeply ideological rather than just a personal requirement.
Having consistently advocated for an equal, casteless society throughout his cinematic career, he wanted to set a practical example for the public. Following the court's direction, he openly expressed his happiness, noting how deeply caste remains entrenched in public systems and hoping his personal decision encourages a broader shift toward a society beyond restrictive identities.
