When two of the biggest superstars of Malayalam cinema, Mohanlal and Mammootty, come together for a massive 125-crore action thriller, you expect the box office to be set on fire. Unfortunately, their latest highly anticipated film, Patriot, has done exactly the opposite. The movie has crashed terribly after its opening weekend and is now heading towards becoming a monumental disaster.  

Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the spy thriller had a promising start, minting around 28 crores worldwide on its opening day. Fans were thrilled to see the legends back in action together, but the excitement died down incredibly fast. The mixed word of mouth and the niche, serious tone of the espionage subject did not sit well with the regular theatergoing audience. 

Once the weekdays started, the collections witnessed a severe free fall. By the end of its first week, the film managed to scrape just about 27 crores net in India and around 73 crores gross worldwide. With a reported budget of 125 crores, the theatrical returns are shockingly low. Even with decent overseas numbers backing it up initially, Patriot is currently struggling to even cross the 100-crore mark globally. 

Trade circles are already declaring it a colossal flop, estimating that the makers and distributors are looking at heavy, absolute minimum losses of over 40 to 50 crores. It is just another harsh reminder that even the biggest stars and massive budgets cannot save a film if the narration fails to connect with the masses.
