Dhanush has been choosing interesting subjects and performing in different films, sometimes in his own direction and sometimes in talented others. Now, he is back with Por Thozhil director Vignesh Raja's next, Kara. Mamitha Baiju has played opposite him for the first time and it released on 30th April. Let's discuss about it in detail.

Plot

Karaswamy (Dhanush) runs away from his house at the age of 16. He falls in love with Malli (Mamitha Baiju) but continues to live as a thief. As Malli dislikes this, he decides to change for her. They get a job at a canteen but looking at Malli cleaning utensils, he decides to change their lifestyle and put up an own canteen. For money, he again goes to his village and house.

His father Kandaswamy (KS Ravi Kumar), a retired military man, has 8 acres of land of their own. But the land is in trouble as he took loan to buy tractors and along with him, all villagers also bought them. Bank manager, who gave them loans is cunning and hence, situation turns against all even Gulf War breaks out. What does Kara do now? Watch the movie to know more.

Analysis

Dhanush gave his best yet again. There is nothing new to really write about his talent and ability to become a character on screen. He is believable as Karaswamy and his performance is the major highlight of the film. Mamitha Baiju is good but her character is limited. KS Ravikumar and Jayaram deliver extraordinary performances within limited scope. They give some heart to the proceedings. Suraj Venjramoodu is wasted.

Por Thozhil director and Dhanush combination excited many film lovers as the director proved his mettle in handling a thriller. But here, he needed to satisfy a star hero image and also tell a story. For that, he needed a much better script that lets important moments breathe.

Each scene after initial setup seems to be cut in a rushed fashion while family emotions are written for them to be felt, giving a context is must. Vignesh Raja seem to have been rushed a little bit at places while at many places, he just did not care about the story. His execution is good but story and screenplay needed lot more than just interesting ideas.

At some point, the film felt like a screenplay that is trying to find moments for Dhanush rather than bringing an ensemble together. Production values are fine but cinematography and editing are very simple without much sparks to talk about. GV Prakash Kumar music and BGM standout. Overall, movie has interesting ideas but not a cohesive script that it needed.

Positives

Dhanush performance

KS Ravikumar scenes

First hour setup

Mamitha and Dhanush scenes

GV Prakash's BGM

Negatives:

Editing feels rushed

Second hour feels routine

Hero being savior angle looks too familiar

Climax lacks impact

Bottomline

Dhanush shines making Kara, a decent watch.

Rating: 2.75/5
