Is Salman Khan's Maatrubhumi Going To Become Another Jana Nayagan?

Jul 3, 2026 3:39PM

The CBFC has once again become the talking point in the film industry. After Vijay's Jana Nayagan remained stuck in certification issues for months despite multiple attempts by the makers to resolve the objections, Salman Khan's Maatrubhumi has now landed in a similar situation. The latest reports suggest that the film is yet to receive its censor certificate, raising concerns about another prolonged delay.

Interestingly, the makers have already made one major compromise. The film was originally announced as Battle of Galwan, but the title was changed to Maatrubhumi in an apparent bid to avoid controversy surrounding its sensitive subject. However, the move hasn't yielded the desired result. Despite the new title, the CBFC is yet to clear the film, leaving its release plans in limbo.

The developments have inevitably drawn comparisons with Jana Nayagan. Vijay's political drama also ran into certification hurdles that snowballed into a legal battle. The delay forced the makers to postpone the release, revisit their promotional plans and wait for months before the film could move forward. Now, trade circles fear Maatrubhumi could be heading down a similar road if the certification issue isn't resolved soon.

Unlike routine censor cuts, both films deal with subjects that demand greater scrutiny. Jana Nayagan reportedly attracted objections over its politically sensitive content, while Maatrubhumi, based on the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers, touches upon a real-life military conflict that continues to be a sensitive topic. That has made the certification process far more complex than usual.

For Salman Khan, the timing couldn't have been worse. The film has already missed its original Eid release before shifting to Independence Day. If the CBFC clearance continues to remain pending, the makers may once again have to rethink their release strategy, resulting in additional financial pressure and a reshuffle of Bollywood's release calendar.

The bigger question now is whether Maatrubhumi will eventually secure a straightforward clearance or if it too will have to take the legal route that Jana Nayagan did. Until the CBFC takes a final call, the similarities between the two films are becoming difficult for the industry to ignore.
