Devdas Story Behind The Scenes
on Jun 26, 2013
'Devadas' the name itself was a sensation at the times. Its been 60 years since Devadas has released.
The story, which was penned by famous Bengali writer sarath, created a sensation not only in the history of literature but also in the film industry. Almost in 12 Indian languages like telugu, tamil, malyalam etc.. the film Devadas was screened but telugu Devadas stood first in the position. The first person to be admired for the success of the film is Mr.Nageshwara rao garu. He took it as challenge and lived in the character of devadas, created by Sharath.
The complete shooting was done in the sets, except few shots like Palleku podam song and savitri's palanquin scene was shot at outdoor. After 1 to 2 days shooting, the team saw the rushes and found ANR looking bright instead of his gloomy character. And they thought, It would be better if they can shoot during nights, so that the actors can showcase their dullness on the face. ANR and D.L narayana the producer, went to each and every artist to ask their Night call sheet. They have done 53 night shootings , and that is the reason ANR showed the expressions of 'Hopelessness' and 'sad'.
In the story of 'Devadas', he never proposes his love to Parvathi. They both doesn't know even that they are in love with each other. That is what the real love. But keeping telugu audience in mind, Director vedantam made few changes in the original story. The dialogue “ siggantha ippude volakaposthe, mari pelli naado” which will be said by devadas to parvathi was the creation of writer samudrala in the story. To convey, that they are in love with each other, he made few changes in the story for the sake of Telugu audience.
After his sensational Talent shown in Telugu devadas, few tried to take the version in Hindi with ANR. After everything got okay, they took dilip kumar in the lead role. 'if I have seen Telugu devadas before itself, I wouldn't have done the role in Hindi. Because ANR did it in a great way' said by dilip kumar.
ANR made Ghantasala garu to eat ice before recording of the boozing songs to bring out some reality. But that didn't came out well. For the song Jagame maaya ghantasala strived hard for 3 months. The song is a very special number when compared with other songs. Akkineni's expressions, the trash around him, a white dog..all these comes to mind when u listen the song even now. And the cough at the end was a heart throbbing one. The cough dubb was given by ghantasala himself.
During the making of movie, akkineni used to shout in the mandir for four hours to regain the voice which is going to use for the entire film, praised by director vedantam. The film Devadas which was released on 1953, June 26 was a biggest hit. It was screened for 420 days and celebrated its platinum jubilee and centenary functions.
