Athidhi Re-Release Marks End Of the Trend?

May 30, 2026 6:27PM

Mahesh Babu's Athidhi re-release has turned out to be a major disappointment at the box office. Despite carrying the star's popularity and decent online buzz, the film failed to attract audiences to theatres in significant numbers.

For the past few years, re-releases have become a successful trend in Telugu cinema. Several older films managed to generate strong openings, packed shows and impressive revenues by riding on nostalgia and fan celebrations. Encouraged by those results, many producers and distributors started bringing back older titles to theatres.

However, Athidhi appears to have hit a wall. The film did not become a hit during its initial release but did find few takers online supporting it as an entertaining film with flaws. Hence, there was a discourse about it working well upon re-release but the lackluster turn-out has shown that people have moved on from the trend.

Industry observers point out that nostalgia alone may not guarantee theatrical success anymore. Audiences are becoming more selective and seem willing to return only for films that have built a strong cult following over the years. While it may be too early to declare the trend completely over, Athidhi's performance is certainly a warning sign. Going forward, re-releases may need more than just star value and social media hype to bring audiences back to theatres.
