Telugu industry’s ever classic and epic fantasy film Mayabazar completes 60 years (Shasti Poorthi) by today. The film was released exactly 60 years ago on March 27th, 1957. Though many classic films have been made in Telugu, Mayabazar is always the best and ever-remembered.

When there was no availability of graphics, director Kadiri Venkata Reddy aka KV Reddy mesmerized audience by making a visual extravaganza. Only with camera technique and other available technology, KV Reddy could generate undreamed-of things. It was a mystery for spectators then.

The film was produced by B. Nagi Reddy and Aluri Chakrapani under their banner, Vijaya Vauhini Studios. The film was shot in both Telugu and Tamil with the same title, but with a few differences in the cast.

The story is an adaptation of the folk tale Sasirekha Parinayam, which in turn is based on the epic Mahabharata. It revolves around the roles of Lord Krishna played by NT Rama Rao and Ghatotkacha played by SV Ranga Rao), as they try to reunite Arjuna's son, Abhimanyu (Akkineni Nageswara Rao), with his love, Balarama's daughter (Savitri).

Mayabazar was screened at the Public Gardens in Hyderabad for its 50th anniversary on 7 April 2007. A May 2013 CNN-News18 poll listed Mayabazar as the greatest Indian film of all time.

Mayabazar became the first Telugu film to be digitally re-mastered and colorized, at an estimated cost of 75 million.
