Liger, Vijay Deverakonda's much-anticipated Telugu film, debuted on Thursday with a South India gross collection of approximately Rs. 17 crores (+2 crore from paid previews in Hindi). Despite the collections, the talk was widely derided by the audience and critics. The film experienced one of the worst crashes in South Indian market.
The film's two-day share in Telugu markets is around Rs 11 crore, and it is expected to have an opening weekend share of Rs 15 to 16 crore. For those who are unaware, the sport-based action entertainer was sold to distributors for Rs. 55 crores, implying a bare minimum loss of Rs. 35 crores is on cards for this Vijay Deverakonda film in Telugu states. If we take the worldwide prospects into account, the film stands to lose over Rs. 50 crores for the distributors.
The film is a flop in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, and it is expected to be out of most Telugu theatres by Monday. Liger had a record number of show cancellations this morning.
The same thing happened with this year's most anticipated release Acharya, directed by Koratala Siva and starring Megastar Chiranjeevi and Mega Powerstar Ram Charan. Now, Liger is on his way to becoming the biggest disaster, beating Acharya to dust.
