Veteran filmmaker, actor and writer K. Bhagyaraj, widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema's greatest storytellers, passed away on Saturday following a cardiac arrest. He was 73. Reports suggest he was rushed to a private hospital in Chennai after collapsing at his residence, where doctors declared him dead. His sudden demise has left the South Indian film industry and millions of cinema lovers in mourning.

Bhagyaraj began his career as an assistant to legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja before making a remarkable mark as a director, writer and actor. Fondly called the "Screenplay King," he revolutionized commercial cinema with his intelligent screenplays, relatable middle-class stories and unique blend of humour and emotion. His films continue to be studied by aspiring filmmakers for their innovative storytelling.

During his illustrious career spanning nearly five decades, Bhagyaraj directed over 25 films and acted in more than 75 movies. Besides filmmaking, he was also a producer, composer, novelist and magazine editor. Several of his blockbuster Tamil films were remade in Telugu and Hindi, making him a celebrated name across Indian cinema.

Bhagyaraj remained active in films even in recent years, appearing in character roles and mentoring young talent. His passing marks the end of an era, with the film fraternity paying heartfelt tributes to a filmmaker whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of writers and directors.
