Story :

'Damarukam' movie is set with a mythology backdrop where the gods kill a demon clan(Asura clan).
Andhakasura (Ravi Shankar), the only rakshasa left in the Asura clan vows to take revenge on gods and destroy the mankind. In order to fulfill this, Andhakasura should marry Maheswari (Anushka Shetty), as she she was born in Panchagraha Kutami and kill her after the marriage. Andhakasura impresses Lord Shiva and takes his word that Shiva will not interfere in this marriage. After coming to know that he has a threat from Mallikarjuna (Nagarjuna), the evil Andhaka kills Mallikarjuna's family and try to kill Mallikarjuna as well. Will Andhakasura's dream come true? Can Mallikarjuna save Maheswari from the devil's clutches? All these elements forms the rest of the story.

Analysis :

Damarukam movie starts off with a terrific and captivating animation story, which explains the audience regarding the fight between Gods and Demons. Director Srinivasa Reddy took a lot of care in portraying the character of Andhakasura and that will be clearly depicted on the big screen. Andhakasura's introduction scene is terrific and and the entire episode has been shot well. Director didn't give much importance for the love track between Nagarjuna and Anushka but the comedy episodes will give a relief for the audience. Interval bang where aghora's try to kill Anushka Shetty and Nagarjuna safeguarding her has been executed well.

Second half of the movie begins with Malli getting closer to Maheswari. As it happens in every socio-fantasy movie, Andhakasura kills Rahul(Ganesh Venkataraman) and get into his body. Most of the scenes are predictable in the second half of the movie as the director have taken reference of some old Telugu film too. Last 35 minutes of the movie has got lot of graphics and will definitely bind the audience to their seats.

Teluguone Perspective :

Director Srinivas Reddy needs to be appreciated for his sincere effort. Many people has written him off before the release of 'Damarukam', but his hard work and his directorial skills have reflected in the film. Though, he took a lot of time to introduce the hero's character in the film, he went according to the script and succeeded in establishing each and every character. 'Kanyakumari' song seems to be mismatched one, as the audience were expecting 'Nesthama' song, when Anushka ties a friendship band  to Nagarjuna.

Just like as it has been speculated, 'Damarukam' has got lot of graphics and in most of the scenes the visual effects were good. 'Nesthama' and 'Reppalapai' song has been shot well and both Nagarjuna and Anushka looked  very glamorous. Teleshopping spoof episode was good and especially Krishna Bhagavan's 'Camels must be in desert' and 'Gods must be crazy' dialogues evoked chuckles. Director has starts the climax episode with 'Shiva Shiva Shankara' songs and it has been well choreographed and tempo starts to build. Nagarjuna killing Andhakasura would have been shot much better. Overall, Damarukam is a decent attempt by director Srinivasa Redde and Nagarjuna, Ravi Shankar have given wonderful performances. 'Dhamarukam' movie has been released late but don't be late for the movie.

Performances :

Nagarjuna has looked dynamic in the movie and his body language is excellent. Being a leading actor in Telugu cinema, it is good to see Nagarjuna in such socio-fantasy movies. Anushka Shetty looked glamorous in the movie and has done her part in limited role, which she was offered. Ravi Shankar is excellent as Andhakasura and his dialogue delivery, performance are terrific. In some of the scenes, he outshines Nagarjuna as well (Point to be noted that just in few scenes). Prakash Raj's get up as Lord Shiva is appealing. Brahmanandam, Krishna Bhagavan, MS Narayana etc have done their job and will bring smiles for the audience.

Technicalities :

Undoubtedly, Devi Sri Prasad's background music is the heart for the film. Songs are good and the background music is outstanding. Visual effects work done by Firefly are wonderful. Cinematography is Choctaw K Naiad is fantastic and Vijay Master's fights are good. Editing by Gautham Raju is ok and the production values of RR Movie Makers are grand.

Positives :

Nagarjuna and Ravishankar's performances
Devi Sri Prasad Music and Background Score
Visual Effects

Negatives :

Some predictable scenes
Cinematic liberty

Final Word : Damarukam is a genuine attempt and will appeal for all sections of audience.

Damarukam Rating 3.25/5
