Ram Gopal Varma appears to be returning to the territory that once defined his strongest work. According to an exclusive report by Bollywood Hungama, the filmmaker is set to direct Harshvardhan Rane in Police Company, a crime thriller based on the life of celebrated Mumbai police officer Daya Nayak.

The project is said to be backed by T-Series, with Harshvardhan Rane stepping into the role inspired by Nayak. The subject is particularly interesting for Varma because the filmmaker has repeatedly explored Mumbai's underworld and the police force, most notably through films such as Satya and Company. His association with Ab Tak Chhappan, which was inspired by Daya Nayak's life, makes this new project even more intriguing.

Daya Nayak became one of Mumbai Police's most recognised encounter specialists, gaining widespread attention for his work against organised crime in the city. His life and career have already provided material for several crime stories, but Varma returning to the subject could bring a distinctly raw and grounded treatment, especially given his earlier fascination with the Mumbai police and underworld ecosystem.

For Harshvardhan Rane, the film could be another significant opportunity to move beyond the image established by Sanam Teri Kasam. The actor has previously taken on darker and more intense characters, including his role in Taish, and a gritty police drama under Varma could offer him a completely different space as a performer.
