Though he was born and brought up in Chennai, his family's traditional soil is Paettai, in Tirunelveli district, Tamilnadu.He was born on 23-Aug-1964, the names of his father-mother being Selvarajan-Kannammal. His wife's name is Meera. His daughter Thamizh sangavai is more than 10 years old, who has an younger brother named Arul roshan.From his young age onwards, he had been developing keen interest in music, which nobody else in the family had been taking notice of, in the beginning. His father Selvarajan had remained a vocalist, who used to take part in stage musical programmes conducted by such popular music directors like Ilayaraja, A.R.Rahman, Gangai Amaran, Deva and Chandra Bose! Yet, it so happened that Selvarajan didn't infer on his own, that his son was having a burning desire for music at the depth of his heart.It was only Rajkumar's mother, who happened to witness one day, how her son used to sit alone and let himself submerged into the pleasure of loud-singing! She started telling her husband, from that time onwards, all about her son's interest in music and thus laid the foundation for his (son's) fruitful, prospective future in that profession. Rajkumar was subsequently made to undergo training in classical music under the learned guidance Subbiah Bhagavathar. At that time Rajkumar was 20 years old.Having finished 3 years training in music, Rajkumar started conducting musical programmes on stage. Whenever he found time he had been trying to find out ways to enter into film music direction. While he was thus on the look out for the opportune moment for his cinefield entry, directors Robert-Rajasekar came forward to book him for composing musical scores for their film "Chinna Poovae Mella Paesu".S.A.Rajkumar not only composed musical scores for this film which feat was his career-first, but he also had written some lyrics for the (same) film and had done playback singing too, for some of the songs. He has won "Best Music Director" Filmfare Award on a few occasions. He says that the letters of felicitations he has been receiving, film after film, from his fans is the real boost for him for reaching new heights in his profession! He's well-versed in playing such musical instruments as keyboard, guitar and dhabaela.His recent musical hits like the films "Surya Vamsam", "Vaanaththai Pola"etc., have taken him to the peak of unrivalled popularity.Apart from film music composition, he has also created a musical album by name 'Rock 2000'. He has plans to create more such albums in the coming days!The song "Kalluri Vaanil" in the movie "Pennin Manathai Thottu" for which he composed the music has become very popular on Youtube as a soramimi viral video.
