STORY: Baahubali, The Dangerous Effect

on Jun 24, 2015

July 10th is the big date in the history of Indian cinema. For the first time, a film that have over 150 crores budget is hitting cinemas with huge hype and utter confidence. Thy name “Baahubali”. Directed by talented Rajamouli and produced by Shobu and Prasad, the film is clocking nearly 4000 screens for its release. As it releases in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi, if possible in Malayalam, at the same time, there is no need to worry about recovery of investment. Still, this film is dangerous.

Combining visual effects and 3D computer graphics, we’ve very few films that made big at box office. With Rajamouli at the helm, there are no such doubts mulling over Baahubali’s success. But the success of this film would redefine the way Indian audiences look at India’s films and how others in the fray get their business dealt. All these days, people got accustomed to watching lower grade visual effects, silly computer graphics and graphics that scare and terrorise them. Flying heroes, scary ghosts, fire trails are what our filmmakers are merely showing to audiences. With Baahubali, that will be changed forever.

We get to see magnificent forts, high rise courtyards, gigantic waterfalls anyway, more than that, the realistic war scenes, the blood spill, the way arrows pierce into torsos, chariots chase soldiers, the battle ground and what not, almost all the scenes have 60% life through visual effects only. As Rajamouli is taking care to showcase these visual effects quite realistic, seamless and unidentifiable, no doubt people feel that Hollywood punch for the first time in an Indian film.

As these intricately carved scenes on silver screen affect viewer’s mindset deeply- next time when they saw some poor quality visuals in any VFX film that is made with around 50 crores budget, surely they are not going to accept it. They will demand for quality and larger-than-life feel. Producers need to dump huge budgets and directors should be careful with their scripts while heroes need to allot more dates to carve out such a film. On a whole, Baahubali raises the standards of Indian cinema but our celebs might struggle to live with it.

A dangerous effect, but surely will revolutionise the way Indian VFX films will be made!!
