His last two films were disasters he hardly had two films which were commercially succesfull in last 15 years and those were Sakhi (Alaipayuthey) and Guru and this directors last two films were big all time flops of the industry and his last film Kadal was a disaster , Financiers and distributers started calling him FLOP RATNAM.
During that time he pendowned a beautifull love story and it is OK BANGARAM (OK KANMANI) and we all know that no one can tell a better love story than Mani Ratnam , yesterday this film was released around 800 plus screens and you know the result , almost all the thearters were either booked or in fast filling mode till sunday , Even though Kanchana 2 also got a good talk but OK Bangaram is a box office winner and it is a huge hit in both tamil and telugu , There is a buzz that this film would be highest grosser of the south till date and lets wait for the official figures and now every one were calling him MONEY RATNAM.
PS : Dont judge a director talent with his bad films .
