Story:
Naval Officer Varun (Karthi) has a mental disorder and behaves abnormal at times. Though he had few girlfriends in the past, he is mesmerized by the beauty of a lady doctor Leela (Aditi), when he is admitted in a hospital in critical condition after a deadly accident. Leela too starts loving him, but she is bothered of Varun’s insolence. However, she adjusts every time, as she adores him more than anything else in the world. One unfortunate incident disturbs their lives real bad. What is it? Will Varun ever change his approach? Will Varun and Leela ever unite?

Positives:
1. Aditi Rao Hydari
2. Cinematography
3. Music

Negatives:
1. Regular Story
2. Dead Slow Narration
3. Karthi’s Characterization
4. Lack Of Entertainment

Analysis:

Like most of Mani Ratnam films, Cheliyaa is also a romantic entertainer. But, the film has no soul. It’s all about a romantic relationship between a loving lady and her arrogant boyfriend. Karthi is a naval officer who has no respect for uncaring father. Though he is already in love with a girl, he falls flat to Aditi in very first sight. He doesn’t waste much time to lure Aditi. He shows beauty of Kashmir to her. In fact, we do fall in love with the picturesque locations, like Aditi did. Then, conflict starts between the two with Karthi displaying his arrogance. After becoming normal, Karthi apologizes to Aditi and she accepts every time. One unexpected incident changes their life completely. The efforts Karthi makes to come out of odd situations he is in to meet Aditi to apologize her one last time are portrayed futilely. Then, movie heads to climax which is one of the rare affable scenes in the movie.

Artists Performances:
Cheliyaa means girlfriend. Karthi’s Cheliyaa in the film that is Aditi Rao Hydari steals the show, indeed, dominates with her cute looks and exceptional performance. We just fall in love with this character. The only thing you remember after coming out of theaters is Aditi and her portrayal of Dr Leela role. She makes us romantic and emotional accordingly. The scene where she moves to tears with heavy feelings burning her out makes every one of us moving. Best quality in Aditi is she even speaks with her eyes. In fact, we anticipate for Aditi to make appearance when she is absent. Overall, she makes great impact than any other artist and technician in the film. Karthi got different role which he hasn’t played earlier. Though he acted as per the characterization, we won’t connect to him owing to his diversified behavior. Nonetheless, he was good in the climax portions. Rukmini Vijayakumar captivates with her dances. RJ Balaji was okay. Other artists played their roles efficiently.

Technical Aspect:
Mani Ratnam has picked a regular story, but the only difference was Cheliyaa was set in navy backdrop. Another unique but intolerable portion was Karthi’s characterization. Apparently, Mani Ratnam hasn’t worked much on screenplay. We hardly remember any scenes, perhaps, because of mind-numbing narration. Ravi Varman’s cinematography is one of the major assets. We wonder why filmmakers go abroad to shoot songs or other sequences, after watching Ravi Varman captured the most-beautiful Kashmir locales. AR Rahman’s songs and background score is other master-work. He tried to elevate few unlively sequences with his BGM. A Sreekar Prasad’s editing should have been sharp. Production values of Madras Talkies are top notch.

Verdict:
Watch this film only for Aditi Rao Hydari and for beautiful visuals. Better skip this one, if you expect more.
